Peter McClenaghan isDirector of Infrastructure and Sustainability at The Consumer Council, responsible for energy, water, and transport policy. 

Prior to joining the Consumer Council, Peter worked as a consultant advising utility companies. This included supporting electricity and gas companies in their RIIO-2 price control business plan development. He also undertook a secondment as Head Regulatory Economist at the European division of a major international payments company. 

Peter developed his energy expertise managing regulatory affairs and compliance for Firmus Energy Gas Distribution and Supply. While there he led development of two price control business plans and an appeal to the Competition and Markets Authority.  

Prior to joining Firmus, Peter spent six years working as a senior policy advisor to Government Ministers and MPs and was involved in numerous high-level political negotiations in Northern Ireland. 

Having undertaken his undergraduate degree at Lancaster University, Peter undertook a Master’s in social research methods at Queen’s University Belfast and has recently been awarded a postgraduate certificate in continuing professional development from Ulster University, with distinction. 

After serving five years as a trustee Peter was appointed chairperson of the advocacy charity Voice of Young People in Care in December 2020.
