Mathias is Full Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH). His research interests include water quality control and water treatment processes, investigating the relationships between water constituents (NOM; heavy metals) and their impact on the whole drinking water supply chain. The impact of climate change is a particular focus of his research. In particular, his research focuses on the application and modification of membranes/materials for the removal of NOM/organic contaminants and heavy metals. Mathias is also Director of the DVGW Research Unit at the TUHH and spokesman for the Energy and Environmental Systems Research Unit at the TUHH.
