Speaker Biography
Simon Harrison is group head of strategy and Fellow at global consultancy Mott MacDonald, working across built infrastructure, energy and international development, to help make good choices in an uncertain world. He is a Clean Power Commissioner for the UK government. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, he is currently chairing its work on electricity decarbonisation, most recently and with Sir Patrick Vallance, leading work on accelerating electricity decarbonisation for the Academy and the National Engineering Policy Centre. He chaired an independent panel for the UK government on engineering standards in electricity, as for many years on behalf of the IET led other work in developing an underlying engineering strategy for the future decarbonised electricity system and contributing to the debate for greater whole systems thinking.
He also co-founded the Net Zero Infrastructure Industry Coalition, a group of leading organisations in the private and public sectors seeking to determine and share best practice in built infrastructure decarbonisation.
Simon has played key roles in the engineering, development and financing of numerous infrastructure projects in sectors including power, water, transport, telecommunications and the built environment, in most corners of the world.
He is a Fellow and former Vice President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and a Fellow of the Energy Institute and the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce and Manufactures. He holds BSc and PhD degrees in engineering from the University of Southampton, UK.
