Speaker Biography
Mike is responsible for delivering a range of smart analytics solutions focusing on optimising wastewater network performance, including spill prediction and blockage prevention, and the application of current and forecast rainfall for flood monitoring. All these are built using MAP, a generic real-time Big Data Analytics platform developed whilst at Meniscus, and now used to combine real-time radar rainfall and level data for thousands of sewer level sensors and CSOs.

Mike has extensive experience optimising energy and chemicals costs across the water sector. He overseas an on-premise Metasphere solution monitoring over 10,00 SCADA telemetry points on over 2,000 water, wastewater and sewage pumping stations. For the last 15 years he has been the nominated statistician for a contract with Elexon that creates the half-hour electricity profiles used by the UK electricity industry. These profiles are used for billing and electricity settlement of circa 40% of the UK electricity market. Mike was a leading proponent of integrating radar rainfall and operational data to help optimise sewer catchments. This led to the creation of the underlying MAP engine in 2014 with grant assistance from InnovateUK – the UK Government’s innovation arm. Since that time, MAP has grown to deliver a broad range of water and wastewater catchment solutions including: smart sewer networks; flood analytics; bathing water quality prediction and developments are underway into smart rivers and smart water networks. He has been instrumental in the industry’s move from point based solutions towards integrated catchment solutions.
