After earlier jobs in the aviation industry and the civil service and a degree in economics from St John’s College Cambridge, Larry Whitty started working for the trade union movement in 1970. He became general secretary of the Labour Party in 1984. After 1994 he acted as Tony Blair’s contact with European matters and became a member of the House of Lords in 1996. After the 1997 election he served as Lords spokesperson in the Foreign Office, a transport and environment minister and as agriculture and environment minister. After leaving the government in 2005, he became chair of the National Consumer Council and Consumer Focus and board member of Ofwat and the Environment Agency. He also has served as chair or trustee of several charities in the fields of environment, fuel poverty and energy efficiency and on the board of companies dealing with energy efficiency and water retail. He is currently a member of the House of Lords EU Select Committee and chair of its committee on the internal market, dealing intensively with Brexit and related matters.
