Introducing IM4Power
A New Initiative for Smarter Information Management
National Grid Strategic Infrastructure, SP Transmission, and SSEN Transmission have launched IM4Power, a collaborative initiative with supply chain partners designed to drive efficiency and innovation in the power sector.
Inspired by successful best-practice networks in the water industry and beyond, IM4Power focuses on establishing common naming standards and streamlined information exchange protocols. These improvements have been proven to accelerate design and construction processes across infrastructure and the built environment.
With the UK’s transmission owners (TOs) facing an urgent need to expand and decarbonise the grid, aligning industry-wide information management is more important than ever. By adopting a unified approach, IM4Power aims to simplify collaboration with supply chain and delivery partners, helping to ease capacity constraints and support the rapid rollout of critical energy infrastructure.
IM4Power Working Groups
Digital Skills
This working group will identify the critical digital capabilities needed across the transmission sector to support innovation, data-driven decision-making, and efficient project delivery. It will explore training pathways, role definitions, skills passports and frameworks to bridge current skills gaps, upskill roles les affiliated with information management and futureproof the workforce.
3D Object
Focused on developing consistent, reusable 3D object standards, this group will define modelling protocols to improve interoperability and efficiency across projects. It aims to support better coordination between design, engineering, and construction teams using object-based modelling workflows.
Model Component Library
This group is developing a client shared standardised model component library to support early-stage design across the transmission sector. By aligning model attributes with asset specifications and contractor requirements, it aims to streamline design processes and improve data consistency across projects.
ISO 19650 Adoption
Aiming to standardise digital information management practices, this group is driving the structured adoption of ISO 19650 in the transmission sector. It will focus on clear information requirements, CDE setup (e.g. ACC), BEP templates, and delivery planning—including risk registers and responsibility matrices—to ensure robust, scalable processes.
Structured Accessible Data (Data Task Force)
This group will define and promote the use of standardised data dictionaries and product data formats to ensure consistent, accessible, and interoperable data across projects. It supports better asset management, procurement, and long-term value from structured digital information.
4D (Time-Based Modelling)
This workstream would explore the integration of time-based 4D modelling into project planning and delivery. By linking design models to construction schedules, it aims to enhance programme forecasting, visualisation, and risk management.
