The focus of our research is captured in our Big Questions. These questions cover many Research Themes and activities of work and represent the key challenges they face, now and in the future.

Utilities have an increasingly high-profile role in delivering net zero, protecting the environment and supporting customers. There is now a clear expectation that these providers of lifeline services go beyond their regulatory requirements in all of these areas. Utilities know they have a duty to demonstrate efficiency, innovation, ambition and a genuine commitment to their customers and their communities. These are long-term responsibilities and require energy and water companies to develop a diverse and inclusive workforce that is fit for future challenges.

The Water Industry Awards offer an unparalleled opportunity to showcase how the UK water sector is driving forward and delivering change.

In 2025 water companies will kick off their biggest ever investment programme, with more than £100 billion being spent up until 2030. Delivering this investment as effectively and as efficiently as possible will require innovation and fresh ways of working. And this is exactly what we are celebrating with the Water Industry Awards 2025.

The 2025 scheme sees a refresh of the categories and criteria to reflect the challenges facing the modern water company and their supply chain partners.

WUN was started in 2018 when a group of likeminded women, working in utilities, united around a common cause. The five founders were not only passionate about the industry they worked in, but also passionate about the contribution women were making and could continue to make in the future.

The Utilities sector still lacks diversity and with many women still being underrepresented. Women make up only 28% of the Utilities workforce & 29.6% of leadership roles – Source Energy & Utility Inclusion Measurement Framework, 2025.

WUN has now created quite a movement. With over 10,000 members and followers and providing a variety events for members to attend as well as a free mentoring service. WUN goes from strength to strength due to our ambitious plans & in January 2025 we won Network of the Year at The Great British Businesswoman Awards.
